im going to be a whiney bitch for a second.
im going to be whiney and say that more people should come visit edmonton.
there might not be beaches or mountains or ferries, but there's a bloody big mall and Stanley Cup playoffs.
also, because i cant afford to fly back and forth between here and vancouver like 10 times this summer.
ok, whiney im done being whiney.

i got to thinking about celebrity tabloids at work today. i make it a point to never read them if i can help it. if someone shoves it in my face and says "look at THIS!!" i cant help that, otherwise, never.
there is a specific reason this thought came about, but im not saying what cause i ended up spending about an hour trying to come up with a qualitative survey in my head that could be used based off said reason, which wotn be told unless i write the thing out, and even then maybe it wont be but just alluded to in some way.
im willing to bet that most people wouldnt spend their work time thinking about qualitative surveys to figure out what personal reasons people have for fetishizing and commodifying other individuals. this of course is excluding all the people who's job is finding this out. yeah.
so.
i'll pose a question.

would you want to be Brad and Angelina's baby?

but, you're response cannot include the the following reasons:

1. yes because that would be cool.
2. yes because i would have brad and angelina for parents.
3. yes because i would be famous my whole life.
4. yes because i could do whatever i wanted to when i grow up.

think about how fucked up that child will be in this society. they had to go to africa for the birth to get away from all the cameras.
that kid will have a camera pointed at him every minute of his natural life.
do you really think it's fair that he'll be thrust into this overwhelming spotlight without knowing why, or having the chance to be raised outside he attention of lenses?
that sad/frightening/disgusting thing about this situation is that there is no justifiable chance that he will be a normal kid. he cant be, ever. how normal do you think you would be if you were raised like that?
people who read tabloids arent seeing him as a child, theyre seeing him as a living breathing product of a cultural industry that has mountains of momentum behind it and shows no signs of ever stopping. infotainment cant thrive on normality. the monster US entertainment business cant convince us all that we're worthless unless we're famous and make $20 million a movie if it says "leave this poor kid alone." and of course if it didnt make us all think we were worthless and plant the thought that we need to compare ourselves to images of fame we wouldnt buy the movies, or the magazines or be so compelled to find out ever last detail about these peoples lives that we refer to them in firsst person as though theyre our best goddamn friend in the whole wide world.

HEY! YOU READ IT IN A FUCKING TABLOID! YOU DO NOT KNOW THEM! THEY ARE NOT YOUR NEIGHBOURS! WHILE YOU'RE OFF READING ABOUT K-FED REAL PEOPLE ARE COMMEMORATING D-DAY! LEARN SOMETHING FUCKING USEFUL!

wow i just defended the brangelina kid...it really is 666 day...

tabloids piss me off. tabloids piss me off about as much as Clubs Days at SFU do. which is a fair bit.

ok, i have to get crackin with the sociology readings.
